This is less than satisfying,
as explanations for aural discrepancies go.
It's eminently reasonable, I suppose. But that doesn't matter at this point; the battle's already been lost in the course of a news cycle, and new copies of the tapes sans
technical glitches will most certainly be treated as tainted. ("More skillfully faked," perhaps, will be the spin from more overtly pro-Liberal professional pundits.) Even if the Tories are completely clean, and merely the victims of a staffer's screw-up in digitizing the tapes, they haven't handled this brilliantly...and that's putting it kindly.
