Out where the bad get a whole lot badder

I can't wait for season two of HBO's Deadwood to start; it's a western far more clever and poetic than it has any right to be, exactly the Sopranos of the Old West that it's sometimes called. But in the meantime, it's fun to critically re-examine the first season in terms of the frontier economics embodied by capitalist supreme/murderous bartender Al Swearengen. (Language NSFW.)
