Edwards' father was learning math on television. And Edwards was proud. So? "I have grown up in the bright light of America, but that light is flickering." Good Lord. He's a half-step away from saying outright that everything bad that happens, forever and always, is George Bush's fault. How many empty chairs are there going to be at that table if a dirty bomb is detonated in Detroit or Philadelphia or San Diego?
Cheney is a hell of a lot more upbeat, oddly enough. He's promoting a message of American exceptionalism, not popular victimization theory. He also makes my point: Perseverance and steadfastness in the war are paramount. Nobody's going to be learning math on TV if we lose.
