Dick Cheney ought to smile more. I can accept that he's naturally just a serious and preoccupied guy, but he rarely smiles in a way that looks natural and genuinely happy. There were flashes of it here, though. He's effective. That's the best I can say. Not inspiring, not rousing, and not very impassioned, but very reasonable and sensible. Cheney is here, surprisingly, the yin to Miller's yang - the calm expositor justifying the previous passionate, white-hot energy. That's casting against type, and it's a neat trick. I applaud Karl Rove for such skillful manoeuvreing. One thing I've noticed as the week has progressed - the timing has become tighter and more professional. That's probably good; the sense of drama and anticipation is heightened.
